Catt's Claws' author got declawed by a virus - been down and am still weak, but on the road to as much wellness as possible for an old lady = And my posts of 02/23 failed to get through. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Nancy Dwyer, Oklahoma NOW newsletter editor and one nice lady I had the joy of clicking a glass of beer with in OK city last summer has a nine-step recovery program from the Republican takover: P - Protest openly and loudly every time a representative, talk show host or right wing conservative attempts to trample our rights. R - Rhetoric. Hold Operation Rescue accountable for their inflammatory speech, which results in violence at women's clinics. O - Organize and demonstrate outside clinics, courthouses, and the capitol. WE must become more vocal and open in our protests. A - Aggressiveness. No longer can we remain passive as calls for welfare reform become veiled attacks on single women with children, the poor, the disabled, and the elderly. C - Confront state and national leaders through newspaper editorials, phone calls to their offices and press releases. T - Teach the young about the herstory of the women's movement. Too often young women and men assume all the rights have been won. I - Involvement. Each of use must become more involved in grass roots elections. V - Vision. We must have a vision of total equality. A human rights amendment which does not discriminate against anyone based on race, sex, or sexual preference. E - Elect. Work tirelessly for candidates who are truly pro-choice and pro-woman -- not these Republican in Democratic drag. ..................................................................... Dang blast it, it's the middle of the week or I'd get in the old jalopy and cruise up to Oklahoma State University March 28, 1995 at 7 pm to hear Dr. Margarethe Cammermeyer, Bronze State recipient, Veteran's Administration Nurse of the Year, and author of _Serving in Silence_. Col. Greta is the highest ranking officer to be booted out of the military (after 20 years of meritorious service) for admitting she was a lesbian. Contact Angela at 405-744-5215 for details. Sarah Brady, whose devotion teamed with Bill Clinton's courage got the Brady Gun Control Bill passed, will be at the University of Oklahoma 7 pm, March 22 at the Women's Student Association. For security reasons (can you imagine such vileness that the Republican victory has spread through this land ! ) attenders must pre-register for tickets (which are free) in advance. NOW members are to call 405-282-6429. ..................................................................... Another big bundle of money is being set aside to defeat Bill Clinton after his latest attempt to equalize our tax base by socking the rich cheats. The Clinton administration says U.S. millionaires who renounce their citizenship to avoid taxes must pay to leave the U.S. of A. where they made their money. Among those who have already left are billionaire investor Kenneth Dart, president of Dart Container Corp., for Belize; Michael Dingman, chairmen of Abex, for the Bahamas; and billionaire John Dorrance III, heir to the Campbell Soup fortune, for Ireland. The first installment of the big time money to fight came when interest rates fell and Clinton had letters sent to all vets with outstanding VA loans suggesting they refinance to save money. It saved veterans about 1.5 BILLION dollars ... and that 1.5 Billion came out of big time Republican pockets and made them REALLY mad. It is rumored that a lot of the money came out of the pockets of a bunch of the bigwigs with the New York Times and caused the Times to change into an anti-Clinton newspaper. ..................................................................... From: MTSATT01@ulkyvm.louisville.edu (Marc Satterwhite, Ars Femina Board Member) ARS FEMINA, the Louisville based ensemble devoted to recovering, publishing, and performing, music by women composers of the Baroque, will present its annual Spring Gala performance on Sunday, March 12 at 4:00 pm in the Crystal Ballroom of the Brown Hotel in Louisville. The performance is free and open to the public, although donations will be accepted after the performance. This year's gala presentation will be Sophie von Braunschweig's (1613-1667) Friedens Sieg (The Victory of Peace). Sophie von Braunschweig was a viola da gamba player, a gifted composer, a philosopher, poet and playwright, one of the brightest intellectuals of her era. .................................................................... Programs that train doctors in obstetrics will be required to teach abortion skills under a new policy adopted by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. It was prompted by reports that teaching hospitals have neglected the training. Programs that refuse to do so risk losing accreditation, which teaching hospitals need to qualify for federal reimbursement for services that medical residents provide to patients. Also, most doctors must graduate from accredited training programs to get certified as competent in their specialties. ..................................................................... A recent survey concluded that 62 percent of the men polled and half of the women are at moderate or high risk of catching a sexually transmitted disease. Yet the 38% who practice safe sex agree it's the woman's job -- 69 percent of women say they're the ones to insist on a condom, compared to 12 percent of men ... a fact that won't change as long as the republican and religious supremacists insist on blaming everything on women and not insisting men support their children. To obtain the new STD booklet, in English or Spanish, write: "There's Something You Should Know," P.O. Box 9132, McLean, Va. 22102. (That address worries me since it's in the heart of ultra-conservative land ...) ..................................................................... From: IN%"bill.pf@genie.geis.com" in answer to my request about sending in information about the domestic violence of anti-abortion leaders: Bob Enyart, 36, a Colorado professed radical right win talk show host was found guilty of child abuse, a Class One misdemeanor, and will be sentenced March 27. He could receive up to two years in prison and a fine of as much as $5,000 and he faces another count of child abuse later this month. His TV show is cabled to Milwaukee, Indianapolis, New Orleans, as well as other locations. Enyart admitted he used a belt and a paddle to spank his 7-year-old stepson but denied he was abusive. Photographic evidence convinced the jury otherwise. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- >>> Send your ideas, comments, and news to irenestuber@delphi.com for inclusion in the Catt's Claws feminist newsletter which will be emailed up to three times a week.
