11-06-94 Women of Achievement and Herstory After last week's revelations about how information unfavorable to Clarence Thomas that was withheld, the larger issue looming for women in next Tuesday's election is the possibility that control of the US Senate will fall into the following Republican hands: Strom Thurmond of South Carolina as the chair of the Armed Services; Alfonse D'Amato of New York as chair of the Banking Committee; Lover boy Bob Packwood of Oregon as chair of the Finance Committee; Jesse Helms of North Carolina as chair of the Foreign Relations Committee; Pubic hair Orrin Hatch of Utah as chair of the Judiciary Committee; anti-choice Nancy Kassebaum of Kansas of the Labor, Human Resources Committee. Has anyone noticed all the newspaper and magazine articles about ethnic attitudes affecting the political races but ignoring the "GENDER GAP?" Beginning about four years ago, for the first time since women began to vote in 1920, the women's vote is dramatically DIFFERENT from the men's, as much as 20% different! ... and the newspaperMEN are trying desperately to nullify it be completely ignoring it. Don't let anyone tell you there weren't notable and effective women throughout history. They were always there, but historians failed to note them in our histories so that each generation of women has had to reinvent themselves.
