11-23-1994 Women of Achievement and Herstory Many readers of this column might want to help in a battle that is going on in California by ascertaining which long distance company you use to connect to cyberspace - most services such as AOL, Delphi, Netcom, etc., offer a choice of Sprint and MCI (aka SprintNet and Tymnet) local access numbers...and a many of the colleges and universities are using Spring or MCI or Bell for their 800 mnumbers... And then act according to your conscience - and a phone call to Sprint at 1-800-877-5045 to express your opinions. One hundred seventy-seven (177) workers were fired at Sprint/La Conexion Familiar when they wanted to form a union for higher wages and better working conditions. More than 140 were women and latinos. They were part of a Sprint Telemarketing firm that sold their services to Spanish-speaking customers. The National Labor Relations Board has charged Sprint with 55 violations of the National Labor Relations Act - and as most know the NLRB's record hasn't been worker-friendly, so Sprint's been really bad. Sprint is fighting every inch of the way in the battle that will take years and years (and probably millions of dollars in legal fees) to put those women and latinos in their places - oh yeah! Even in my small city of Hot Springs I have a choice of using either Tymnet or Sprint to hook into Delphi. If you don't know the alternate local long distance service numbers for your area, call Tymnet at 1-800-336-0149 (Canada 1-703-442-0145). Although her husband owned the paper, she was acknowledged to be the best man for the jobs she held. Born to a wealthy family which went broke, she worked her way through the final part of college in 1903. Event 11-23-1935: Ethel Legins conducted her opera Gale at the Chicago City Opera. It is the first opera by a woman to be mounted by a major opera company. Event 11-23-1942: Lieutenant Commander Dorothy Constance Stratton appointed commanding officer of the Coast Guard Women's Reserve. Quote du jour -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- "My discussion concentrates upon two broad areas: upon the _ideology_ held concerning women, children, blacks, American Indians, and foreigners and upon the _reality_ of their lives... "Among my particular concerns ... is the similar treatment that WASMs (white, Anglo-Saxon males) gave to all human beings other than themselves, as well as to the environment. There are more similarities than differences between the white male attitude toward women, Indians, black slaves, forest, and wildlife than historians have realized. (Sochen's book ) though largely concerned with women's lives and thoughts, also include material about these other less privileged humans and about the preyed-upon environment. The intention is to point out the multiple examples of WASM consistency of attitude and behavior throughout the American past. "_Herstory_ surveys each major historical period in light of the life stories, experiences, and thoughts of some of its forgotten Americans." --Above was excerpted from the preface of _Herstory, A Record of American Woman's Past_, by June Sochen of Northeastern Illinois University. Sherman Oaks California: Alfred Publishing Co., Inc. 1974 & 1981. ISBN 0-88284-115-7. Although out of print this marvelous book may be ordered through your interlibrary system. If anyone has an superfluous copy of this book, I would sure appreciate the opportunity to buy it. My library of feminist/woman books will be donated to a college or women's center.
