Architect Marion Griffin

DATES, ANNIVERSARIES, and EVENTS

QUOTE by Fran Lebowitz.

Marion Lucy Mahony Griffin

Born Feb. 14, 1871, Marion Lucy Mahony Griffin, architect, delineator, the second woman to graduate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology architects course, and the first woman to register to practice architecture in Illinois. Working with Frank Lloyd Wright from 1895 she refused to take over his Prairie School when he went to Europe but agreed to stay as designer.
She actually designed several of the homes Wright is famous for and on his return from Europe Wright accused her of trying to steal clients and projects. She broke with him in 1909. She assisted her husband in the design of Canberra, Australia and lived there for 20 years.
After a stint in India and the death of her husband, at 67 she returned to Chicago and remained active for over two decades. Her renderings and delineators of the designs of Wright and Walter Burley Griffin make it difficult to decide where one began and the other left off. Her widowed mother was principal of the Kaminsky School in Chicago.

QUOTES DU JOUR

LEBOWITZ, FRAN:
"Girls [sic] who put out are tramps. Girls [sic] who don't are ladies. This is, however, a rather archaic usage of the word. Should one of you boys happen upon a girl who doesn't put out, do not jump to the conclusion that you have found a lady. What you have probably found is a Lesbian."
            -- Fran Lebowitz, humorist.
