Women on Stamps

The first woman on a U.S. stamp was actually Queen Isabella - however the first American woman was Martha Washington - who did not appear until 1902, even though we've had postage stamps as we know them since 1847. Ben Franklin was the first - as Post Master - followed by George Washington. Here is the beginning of a special section devoted to women on U.S. regular postage stamps - inspired in part by Jennifer Gagliardi and Irene Stuber. Please note that because this section is so labor intensive the many commemorative and collector stamps may not be featured here. However as time permits we will continue to add stamps until the 85 regular stamps honoring women are displayed here.
