Overholser Keohane, named the first woman to head Duke University at Durham,
N.C.
Keohane had been president of Wellesley College since
1981. Her sister Geneva Overholser is the editor of the Des Moines Register
who brought the subjec of rape victim identification into the open with
a series of articles that won her newspaper the Pulitzer.
Keohane earned her B.A. and M.A. at St. Anne's College
of Oxford University in England with first class honors in philosophy,
politics and economics. She received her Ph.D. in political science from
Yale University. Although not classmates, Keohane and President Bill Clinton
attended the same high school in Hot Springs, Arkansas. Both attended Oxford
(Clinton as Rhodes scholar rather than as regular student), and both attended
Yale where Keohane received her Ph.D. and Clinton his law degree.

B. 12-11-1813, Clemence Sophia Harned Lozier,
physician. Teaching while studying medicine with her physician brother,
she emphasized anatomy, physiciology, and hygiene with her girl students,
almost unheard of subjects in those days. After getting her medical degree
in 1853, she relocated in New York City specializing in obstetrics. She
was able to form the New York Medical College and Hospital for Women in
1863, the first women's medical school in New York State.
She was also a fierce supporter of suffrage and of
Susan B. Anthony, serving as president of several suffrage organizations.
B. 12-11-1849, Ellen (Karolina Sofia) Key,
Swedish feminist and writer with advanced ideas on love, marriage,
morals, and sex.
B. 12-11-1863, Annie Jump Cannon, astronomer
who developed the Harvard Classification System of spectra which classified
by the surface temperatures of the stars. She classified some 272,000 stars
in the Henry Draper Catalogues and otherwise classified almost 400,000
stars on her way to discovering more than 300 variable stars and five novas.
She is the first women to have ever been awarded a honorary doctorate by
Oxford University.
B. 12-11-1876, Ada Louise Comstick, first full-time
president of Radcliffe College. ALC was first dean of women at the
University of Minnesota (1907), first dean of Smith College (1912), ran
college 1917-18 but was refused the title of acting president because of
her sex, then named president of Radcliffe 1923. Since Radcliffe actually
had no faculty, one of her jobs was to negotiate with Harvard for full
academic programs for the women of Radcliffe. She was instrumental in Harvard's
finally taking full responsibility for educating women in the liberal arts.
She retired in 1943. An active feminist.
B. 12-11-1931, Rita Moreno, the first performer
to win all four major entertainment awards:
1962 Academy Award for her work in the movie West Side Story; 1975
Tony for Gomez in The Ritz; Grammy for her recording work with The
Electric Company; and Emmies for her work in The Muppet Show and
The Rockford File.
